Salons vs. Texting and Online Chatting

9/18/2014

During the Enlightenment, writers, artists, philosophes, and others exchanged ideas in salons, or informal social gatherings.  Salons provided a way for people to gather and share ideas.  Today, we know that many people do this without ever meeting in person - through the internet.  People are able to join chat rooms or blogs to share their thoughts and ideas world wide.  Although, many discussions on the internet lack the serious-minded tone of a salon conversation and the benefit of face-to-face conversation.  The internet does, however, provide a sense of community, where people can gather to discuss ideas, even if it is a "virtual" living room (example: Facebook).  In addition, cell phones provide people with the ability to communicate through text messages. Many people today spend more time texting and emailing friends and colleagues rather than engage in conversations.

Question 1: Compare salons of the Enlightenment with cell phones and Internet chatting.  Explain which you think is the better forum for communicating and sharing ideas.  Why?

Question 2: Does text messaging, Instagram, and Facebook help or hurt young peoples' abilities to communicate face to face through verbal conversations?

I think that the best way of communicating is in person because with a cell phone it is not as efficient because if you need to give them something or give the personal information that you do not want other people to have you would tell him in person and in private not in cell phone were a person might hear. I think that Facebook and Instagram and text messaging and other communicating apps hurt the peoples ability for communicating face to face through verbal conversation because because that are in there phone most of the time are most likely to keep texting people and can talk thing which they wont say in person and also people that are texting would not be used to communicating face to face with that person and when that person is texting him or her they might last hours that person which will hurt that person because not only he or she is wasting time by texting but also she is getting used to communicating in texting then face to face with a person.

I think that the best way of communicating is in person because with a cell phone it is not as efficient because if you need to give them something or give the personal information that you do not want other people everyone will end up knowing having that tell him or her in person and if you don't you would do it online I feel that there should be more communication to one another. I think that Facebook and Instagram and text messaging and other communicating apps hurt the peoples ability for communicating face to face through verbal conversation because they are in there phone most of the time are most tent to be on the phone texting 24/7 and talking in person they wont say what the same thing they would say online and also people that are texting would not be used to communicating face to face with that person and when that person is texting him or her they might last with that person which will hurt that person because not only he or she is wasting time by texting but also she is getting used to communicating in texting but in person.

In my opinion, I think using ur phone to communicate is more efficient than talking to a person face to face. You can't see that person all the time so when you want to talk to them their not there with you. And also what if this person lives far away from you let's say in another state or country you can use your phone to talk to them whenever you want to. Many people use their phones to call or text because it's easier than having to tell the person face to face. But when you communicate with them sometimes you have to be careful on what you say because it could hurt their feelings even when you are texting or calling. Back then you had to write a letter to them and takes a lot of work because what if the letter gets lost and you have to wait days even weeks just for the letters to go back and forth. It's also a hassle when meeting up with the person sometimes because you would have to take a train and set up a time to meet up. So this is why I think texting and calling is a better way to talk.

Q2: I believe that kids and teens these days are so advanced in technology and they are just stuck on their phones. But also i think that cell phones(smartphones) are very useful for school. But also from the 1800 to the 1900's they did not have cellphones. They had to look it up in a glossary or something, also kids and teens are not socializing as back in the day. So i believe that socializing is effecting kids and teens education.

Salons of the enlightenment is the best idea for sharing ideas and practice communication skills. when you call someone on the phone, it always has a different effect on people. I think social media doesn’t hurt nor help young people. communicating face to face is and/or should be a natural instinct. All though some people prefer the salon for the verbal conversations themselves
