Genocide in the Congo

1/7/2021

The Power of images and photos can change history and expose human atrocities.  In 1905, missionary Alice Harris took photographs with her Kodak camera exposing the horrific mutilations of the Congolese people by the Belgium Government.  King Leopold's rubber slave trade killed twelve million people in the Congo, while thousands of survivors were left with mutilated limbs.  The photographs were published in newspapers around the world and helped to end King Leopold's reign of the Congo.
1.  Discuss the power of photographs and smart phones in present society? What examples of injustices can they expose?
2.  What effect do these images have on your thoughts regarding
imperialism in Africa, specifically the Congo?
3.  What are your thoughts on the European imperialism in Africa?

The Guillotine and Capital Punishment

During the Reign of Terror of the French Revolution, 300,000 people were arrested.  Of those people, 17,000 were executed by the Guillotine.  Many of those who were executed were victims of mistaken identity, or were falsely accused by their neighbors.
Today, over 30 states in the U.S. (including the military and federal government) have the Death Penalty, or Capital Punishment as part of their State Laws.  Since 1976, there have been over 1,200 executions in America.
Do you believe the Death Penalty should still exist?  Why, or why not?  Consider possible innocent victims and consider mass murderers.  Give your reasons for or against Capital punishment.

Article I, Section 9 of the U.S. Constitution allows the Executive Branch to suspend habeas corpus when in cases of rebellions or invasions.
*On September 24, 1862, President Lincoln issued a proclamation suspending the right to writs of habeas corpus during the Civil War.
*On February 19, 1942, President Roosevelt signs Executive Order 90066 authorizing military areas for people considered to be dangerous to U.S.
*On October 17, 2006, President Bush signed a law suspending the right of habeas corpus to persons "determined by the United States" to be an "enemy combatant" in the Global War on Terror.
                                            ---------------
1.  Do you believe habeas corpus should ever be suspended, allowing the U.S. government to imprison individuals without formal charges or a right to a fair trial?  What about in times of rebellions or invasions (9/11 & Pearl Harbor)?
2.  This past June the State of New York suspended Habeas Corpus for citizens protesting the murder of George Floyd.  Do you believe it is right for the government to suspend Habeas Corpus rights for New Yorkers who were arrested in their protest of the killing of George Floyd? Why or why not? Explain your answer.  View the link to the article on New York/Habeas Corpus:

What are your thoughts on the El Sistema music program in Venezuela?  How do you think this music program helps young students deal with living in cities, such as Caracas, where there is horrific poverty and crime?  What social and educational values do you see these children developing through learning music?  In your opinion, how important is providing an Arts education for any student in the world?

Palestine-Israel Conflict

After viewing the documentaries Unsettled and 5 Broken Cameras and discussing in class the historical conflict between Palestinians and Israelis, what is your opinion on this never-ending feud?  Do you believe one side is more responsible for the violence and division of the land?  Do you believe in the Zionist Movement, in which some Israeli Jews believe this is their rightful land dating back to the Biblical times of Abraham and Moses?  Are there any solutions to this conflict?  What role should the United States government play?  Should the United States continue to financially support the Israeli military? All of your thoughts and opinions are encouraged!

Salons vs. Texting and Online Chatting

9/18/2014

During the Enlightenment, writers, artists, philosophes, and others exchanged ideas in salons, or informal social gatherings.  Salons provided a way for people to gather and share ideas.  Today, we know that many people do this without ever meeting in person - through the internet.  People are able to join chat rooms or blogs to share their thoughts and ideas world wide.  Although, many discussions on the internet lack the serious-minded tone of a salon conversation and the benefit of face-to-face conversation.  The internet does, however, provide a sense of community, where people can gather to discuss ideas, even if it is a "virtual" living room (example: Facebook).  In addition, cell phones provide people with the ability to communicate through text messages. Many people today spend more time texting and emailing friends and colleagues rather than engage in conversations.

Question 1: Compare salons of the Enlightenment with cell phones and Internet chatting.  Explain which you think is the better forum for communicating and sharing ideas.  Why?

Question 2: Does text messaging, Instagram, and Facebook help or hurt young peoples' abilities to communicate face to face through verbal conversations?
